Harry Martin joins HWHC

We are delighted to announce Great Britain international Harry Martin as our first signing of the summer for the Men's 1s as we look to better our top 4 finish last season.

Midfielder Harry made his full international debut for GB when he was just 17 years old and at still only 24 has already represented GB in two Olympics, won Commonwealth Games and Hockey World League Bronze medals in 2014, racking up a remarkable 151 caps and 13 goals for England and GB to date. In 2012, Harry was shortlisted for the FIH World Young Player of the Year Award. Harry is currently with England at Lee Valley for the Hockey World League Semi-Finals taking place in London for the next two weeks - tickets still available if you want to cheer the boys on!

Harry joins us after a successful season playing for Rotterdam in the Netherlands, helping them to second place in the league and having previously helped Beeston to two Premier League titles. He's also not just good with a stick and ball, he has a first class economics degree from the University of Nottingham.

On joining Hampstead and Westminster Harry said "After a fantastic year in Rotterdam, I'm delighted to be joining Hampstead & Westminster. The club is in an exciting place following last season and shares my ambitions of domestic and European success. Being coached by Kwan is a great opportunity to develop my game and I want to pick up as much as I can from him. There is also a strong emphasis on having fun both on and off the pitch, which is important to me and there seems to be a really social environment around the club as whole."

After a successful season last year for our Men's 1s which culminated in the League Finals weekend for the first time in our history, the squad is relatively unchanged. Harry’s addition to the club not only brings his exceptional talent, but also his invaluable experience of big game situations. The team is already looking forward to the new season and the addition of a few more new faces will help us to push for the National Premier League title.

We are real excited to see Harry pull on the blue and white stripes and look forward to working with him in his continued development through to the next Olympics and beyond.

Check out this little beauty Harry stuck in for Rotterdam last year.

Social Events Coordinator
One member from each side of the club, ladies’ and men’s, who know how to party(!!!) and organise fun club events.

Membership Coordinator
We would like a friendly person with a bright smile to welcome our new members throughout the season. You will be responsible for sending them the new member pack and ensuring they sign-up to pay annual fees. You will work closely with Commercial Officer, Shrimpie, who is responsible for our membership list and Club Captains, Beth and Doddsy, to integrate new members in their team.

Umpire Assistants
We need one person from each club, ladies' and men's, to assist Arnie, our Umpire Coordinator, in the weekly task of securing umpires for teams. Your main responsibility will be communicating to teams who their umpires are.

Every year we are set a target which is made up of fundraising events, individual donations, and corporate donations. Your role is to ensure the club has several sociable fundraising events in the diary, some organised by you and others by individuals or teams. The key to reaching our target is Match Funding e.g corporations match a certain amount (determined by them) which is raised by an employee of their company who has completed a sponsored run for HWHC. Check out the HWHC Just Giving page here. You will be working closely with our Commercial Officer, Shrimpie who is responsible for sourcing corporate donations.

HWHC Dream Team 2016/17 Fantasy Hockey

Now you can enter The HWHC Dream Team, fantasy hockey league. Pick your XI now!

After an extended hiatus, it's back, but would you pick yourself?

We are delighted to announce the return of HWHC's Dream Team Fantasy Hockey competition. Whether you want to play to win the CASH prize (amount will be sizeable!),  to give your mates grief about their own shocking scores, or to desperately work out who that person is that you fancy before including them in your team to try and flirt with them, then this is the competition for you.  It's a lot of fun!

The league will work in exactly the same way as last year - for those new to it, it's dead simple.  You can select players from throughout the club (max 2 per team) who you think will score you the most points on the weekend. Points are awarded for appearances, goals, clean sheets, umpiring other teams etc with penalties in place for those that pick up cards with their back chat to umpires or have a penchant for the weekly Dick of the Day award - A full list of how to score points (and have points deducted!) can be found here. Basically start with Neil Hamilton and work it out from there. You don't need to be an expert either, you may feel that just picking a "stupid name XI" a "hot men XI" or even a "Dutch XI" (I think we have enough?) is enough to enjoy the fun.

Players are valued using a series of complex algorithms and random number generators - depending on the player and their team’s performance over recent seasons. And its up to you to select your team within the allocated budget. But if your diamond in the rough isn’t performing as you’d have expected then of course we have a number of transfers available to use throughout the season, however and whenever you want.

And if the opportunity to prove the merits of an HWHC superstar wasn’t enough there will be prizes on offer. CASH prizes!
Entry is £15 with all profit going towards the club, so get involved and test yourselves against the rest. Please note that it is free to register and enter a team on the website, but expect to be chased for your £15 by and angry goal keeper if you haven't paid soon!

Please note - the first week of points scoring is next Saturday, 15th October, so you have one weekend to research.  Get your entries in and team picked by Friday night!

Smudge returns to the pitch!

Our Director of Hockey, Richard Smith aka "Smudge" is back on the pitch this season, making his competitive debut for the M1s, three years after joining the club. He suffered a career threatening knee injury playing for GB during the 2012 London Olympics, which has prevented him from playing hockey at the highest level ever since.

Most people would have given up trying to get back to top-level hockey after such a serious injury and with a long time of the pitch; but it is indicative of his winning mentality that he has tirelessly worked towards this return. HWHC is ever grateful for all the hard work Smudge has put in to the club and wish him a fantastic first game today against Canterbury. Good luck Smudge!

Goalkeepers - JOIN US!

This season we have suffered a shortage of goalkeepers. If you are a GK and interested in joining a top London club, get in touch - Annual subs are free for Goalkeepers!

If you used to play and fancy getting the pads on again.

If you play for another club and fancy making the move to Hampstead and Westminster - we promise you won't regret it!

If you've never played between the sticks and fancy giving it a go.

If you've just moved to London and are looking for a fun (but serious about hockey!) club to join in a great location - home pitches and club house are a short walk from Maida Vale tube station on the Bakerloo Line.

We want to talk to you!

Please email Men's Club Captain Doddsy or Deputy Ladies' Club Captain Beth for more info.
